Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator program grant approved
Hospital Foundation Grants Program Secures $73,721.70 in Program Funding for 2011
Grass Valley, Calif. –Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital (SNMH) Foundation was recently awarded a major grant from the Sacramento Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. SNMH Foundation has been granted $73,721.70 to fund the Breast Cancer Navigator Program in the Breast Imaging Center at SNMH.
“This is the third time Susan G. Komen has funded the Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator program which is a testament to the dedication of our nurses, the innovative programming that they develop and the work of our Foundation to continue to secure funding,” said Kimberly Parker, Executive Director of SNMH Foundation. Securing grant funds for various projects and programs at SNMH is a major role that the SNMH Foundation plays in ensuring that our Hospital is adequately prepared to provide top quality healthcare to our community.
The grant funds for the 2011-2012 grant period will be used to support the nurse navigator’s salary, awareness and outreach activities, the Promotora program to provide outreach to the Latino community and outreach to remote communities in the Hospital’s service area. “An innovative outreach tool that this grant will fund is an Interactive Multimedia Breast Cancer Education Kiosk that will travel around the community. The kiosk will have information about local services available, how to get a free mammogram and how to know if you are at risk. A health assessment tool will be available as well. Women will also be able to submit their contact information so that the Nurse Navigators can follow-up with them to answer questions and set appointments if they choose.”
“The mail goal of the grant funding is to ensure that any barriers that could prevent a timely diagnosis and treatment are eliminated,” said Kimberly Parker Executive Director of SNMH Foundation. “Some barriers to treatment for women in our community can be language barriers, location barriers or financial barriers.” For our uninsured patients or those that can not afford the cost of a screening mammogram, the nurse navigators can utilize the Barbara Schmidt Millar fund at SNMH Foundation to help cover the cost for those patients. The Barbara Schmidt Millar Triathlon takes place each September to raise vital funding to support subsidized mammograms for the underserved through SNMH Foundation.
