Nancy Avilla Honored with Mielke Award
Grass Valley, CA~March 10, 2009~Nevada City resident, Nancy Avilla, recently received the prestigious Frederick W. Mielke, Jr Award-- an award earned by PG&E employees for their outstanding community service. Avilla received the award for her incredible work with the Barbara Schmidt Millar Celebration of Life Women's Triathlon. PG&E donated $5,000 to the cause in honor of Avilla's service.
Avilla has been on the triathlon's board of directors for five years. She began as a volunteer organizing the event expo and now organized the registration process for the entire event. With Avilla's service, the triathlon has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support women with breast cancer in our community. "It's such an honor to be recognized by PG&E and to be able to work with an organization that does so much to support breast cancer patients locally," emphasized Avilla.
The Barbara Schmidt Millar Celebration of Life Women's Triathlon is held every September to raise funds for mammogram's at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital's Breast Imaging Center for women in western Nevada County that cannot afford the cost. Further assistance is available for women who are diagnosed with breast cancer but need assistance with costs related to their treatment. The triathlon also raises funds to support scholarships for high school females graduating in western Nevada County pursuing a career in the nursing or medical field. Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation is the fiscal agent for the triathlon.
